The Context

The Site is on The Ham, Brentford, in the London Borough of Hounslow. It is located along the Grand Union Canal Route, on the River Brent. To the North East lies an emerging part of the Borough - The Brentford Project - which connects to the site along The Ham. Further North, the High Street provides a range of amenities and services. Immediately west of the site is Shire Place, an existing four storey residential development.

A number of houseboats are moored along the River Brent. Further south, Syon Park is a listed green space which contains the west London residence of the Duke of Northumberland.

The site sits within The Ham Character Area in the Grand Union Canal and Boston Manor Conservation Area. The Ham Character Area lies between Brentford Bridge and the former railway bridge to the former docks.

A waterside walkway run along the south of the site. Currently, the connection from The Ham to the waterside path is constricted by the proximity of the existing building to the road bridge. This makes the pathway difficult to find and uninviting. Unkempt vegetation contributes little to the public realm.

Surrounding Context

The site is adjacent to The Brentford Project, the emerging Ballymore development to the north east. Therefore the site plays a critical role, mediating between the two distinct pieces of urban fabric. Here you can see a massing model highlighting the location of the site and its surrounding:

Ultimately, the proposed development aims to:

  Create a vibrant new community

  Re-invigorate the High Street

  Reconnect the Waterside

  Celebrate the unique history
